As the Winter months approach, the air starts to get dry and my skin – especially my lips tend to suffer. They get chapped and form that dry, crusty layer of dead skin that I end up biting or pulling off, which results to raw and bloody lips. Not cute. So I decided that this year I’m going to try to do something new by making my own DIY lip scrub and lip balm to keep my lips baby soft during the cold winter months.
A lip scrub is quite easy to make and helps remove that dead skin that piles up to reveal the soft and kissable skin underneath. To make it, i’m taking
– 2 tbsp of organic cane sugar
the sugar I’m using has larger granules so that it helps slough away the dead skin cells better than white granulated sugar which i tend to think dissolves a little bit too quickly.
Next I’m adding the same amount –
– 2 tbsp of coconut oil.
Coconut oil is one of my favorite ingredients not only for baking, but also for my skin. It’s a really effective moisturizer full of Vitamin E that keeps my skin smooth and protects against cracking
Now for the flavorings. To keep it seasonal, I’m going to be adding
– 1 tsp of maple syrup,
– ½ tsp of my pumpkin spice mix, and
– ¼ tsp of vanilla extract.
It smells like a Fall dessert.
I’ll Mix it all together, but i’ll be careful not to overmix because I don’t want the sugar to dissolve. And that’s it! I like to keep this in the shower so it’s easy to access and I’ll just use it once a week.
Now that I’ve cleaned up my lips using the lip scrub I’m going to maintain them by making a DIY lip balm. It’s all natural, easy to make, and best of all, I can make a ton of them. If you guys are like me where you’re constantly losing your lip gloss, lipstick, lip balm, this is really great because you can just whip a few up and have another one ready to go.
In a small sauce pan, I’m combining
– 2 tbsp of coconut oil,
– 2 tbsp of raw honey –
together with the coconut oil, raw honey restores hydration to the deepest layers of skin.
– 3 tsp of beeswax
that I’ve grated out of this beeswax block that I’ve bought at the health food store. Beeswax adds as a protective barrier for your lips against the cold and dry elements. And it also keeps the lip balm solid during warmer temperatures. I’ll put this on really low heat, stirring constantly until the honey melts and everything is combined. Now i’ll add in
– ½ tsp of this strawberry powder
that I made in a grinder, using freeze dried strawberries. This will give the lip balm a yummy taste and a pretty color. And finally, 10 drops of this sweet orange essential oil to boost the taste and smell. The essential oil is totally optional but I like the idea of strawberry orange lip balm. What flavor combination would you guys do?
I’ll stir it again until the mixture is combined and then I’ll transfer it to my little lip balm containers. This will fill quite a few of them so you can share them with your friends! I’ll let it firm up for about half an hour and then it’s ready to use.
It’s lip smacking good. It definitely has that Strawberry orange taste to it, and it’s so smooth. I love how glossy it is too. I hope you enjoyed this natural beauty tutorial and be sure to check out my DIY Body Scrub: https://youtu.be/W-Ir-nARC-A
