Removing Eyelash Growing Incorrectly (Epilation)

Removing Eyelash Growing Incorrectly (Epilation)

Here you see a patient having her mis-directed eyelashes removed. This is done under high magnification using the slit lamp microscope. When such lashes are epilated in this way with appropriate forceps, it is important that the lash is withdrawn with its root intact, so that a broken stub of lash is not left which can cause the surface of the eye to get scratched and possibly infected. In countries such as Malawi ingrowing eyelashes, or trichiasis can cause severe corneal scarring and blindness. Often this is caused by the trachoma virus which causes scar tissue to form on the inside of the eyelid which contracts causing the lashes to rub on the eye. On our trips to Malawi we epilate many eyelashes.
Other causes include blepharitis and entropion
